Today, we’re excited to announce our newest feature, Credential Recovery—a significant upgrade to our Digital ID Wallet, powered by Dock’s innovative Cloud Wallet technology, that makes credential recovery quick, secure, and convenient.

Why Credential Recovery Matters

Traditionally, Verifiable Credentials are stored solely on the user’s mobile device.

If the device is lost or replaced, users can lose access to their credentials—a major inconvenience, and often a critical barrier in ID verification.

Credential Recovery: Recovering Credentials with Ease and Security

With Credential Recovery, credential issuers can now offer their users a cloud backup option through Dock’s innovative Cloud Wallet technology.

This advancement allows credential issuers to create an ID wallet in the cloud for each user, ensuring that credentials are accessible anytime, even if a device is lost or replaced.

Each Cloud Wallet is fully encrypted using the user’s biometric, which means that only the user can unlock and access their wallet.

Credential issuers also have the flexibility to choose the specific biometric method (such as fingerprint or facial recognition) that best suits their security requirements.

The Cloud Wallet is currently only accessed through a mobile ID wallet, either as a standalone app or integrated with your existing app. In the future, the Cloud Wallet will power app-less and web-based credential management flows while ensuring the user’s data is secure and under their exclusive control.

How it Works: Cloud Backup with End-to-End Security

Credential Recovery is powered by Dock’s Cloud Wallet technology, built into our React Native SDK.

During setup, credential issuers can choose to enable “cloud storage,” providing a secure backup solution for their users.

Here’s how we ensure robust security and control:

  1. Flexible Cloud Infrastructure with End-to-End Encryption: Credential Recovery can operate on AWS infrastructure or within the client’s own cloud environment. When hosted on AWS, all data is end-to-end encrypted, ensuring full protection in transit and at rest. This flexibility allows clients to select the cloud setup that best meets their operational and security requirements.
  2. Biometric-Driven Cloud Wallets: For each user, a dedicated Cloud Wallet is created and encrypted using a key derived from the user’s biometric. This setup ensures that only the user can unlock their wallet and access their credentials. Credential issuers have the flexibility to select the biometric method that best suits their security needs (e.g., fingerprint, facial recognition). Note that this functionality requires a separate contract with a biometric provider.
  3. User-Controlled Decryption: Data is decrypted and processed only in the user’s mobile wallet app, safeguarding it against unauthorized access. Even our servers cannot access the decrypted data, as it remains fully under the user’s control.
